Summary: Descendant of explorer Jedediah Smith, engineer father, and banking mother. Married a trainer/singer and have two Latino teenagers. Lived overseas 8 years and visited 64 nations.


Primary School: Lived in WASP/Polish/Italian neighborhood and worked early to gain independence.


High School: Attended multi-ethnic, inner city, magnet (limited enrollment) school. Learned to appreciate differences, leadership challenges, and humility. Owned small business.


College: Worked on assembly line, as a hospital orderly, busboy, waiter, and captain. Studied international relations and nonformal education. Produced training videos, did a nonformal education with Indonesian government, and helped write book: Living Overseas.


Teacher, Counselor, Coach: Embraced challenge of teaching, counseling, and coaching people from different cultures including a graduate cross-cultural communication course. Volunteered as a mental health counselor and created a treatment program for African-Americans and Latinos.


Learner: Lived one year as a minority in Europe & Asia to study learning/change strategies.
